A bridge too far-fetched?
A new Thames river crossing, proposed to span the river between Nine Elms and Pimlico, has been the subject of an open competition for architects.
Wandsworth council has drawn up a list of 74 possible designs by architects. These range from futuristic concept bridges in which bicycle riders and pedestrians share a utopian river crossing idyll, to the downright bloody insane.
But which designs will hold water, and which will be blown out of the water by the competition?
The judges will have to cross that bridge when they come to it.
For now, it’s going to be something of a bridge over troubled water as there is plenty of local opposition to the plan.
Both the Labour and Conservative parties in Westminster have burnt their bridges with the plans, so to speak, after residents complained, claiming it would destroy one of the only green spaces left on the river bank.
The unveiling of the competing plans comes hot on the heels of news of a legal challenge to another proposed Thames crossing; the controversial garden bridge.
Either way, it’ll all be water under the bridge one day.
Let’s take a look at what the future might hold.
Or is it Wembley Stadium Bridge?
It’s just an impression of a bridge. You can just glimpse some curly ramps though.
Is that a bridge?
Loops, figures of eights, this looks fun.
All back to the party bridge
